Where the Gems are found

Out of the thirty eight synonyms that earth has been mentioned in Amarkosh,
the great Sanskrit dictionary, three- Vasudhaa, Vasumati and Ratnagarbha- are cyclical giving the same effects to mean that the earth bears gems in her womb.
According to ancient hearsay about how the gems indeed were found, there came in the Indraloka- the Heaven- the king of the underworld demons, Wali. He wanted to conquer the Heaven and win over all the Gods. There he was accosted by the
commander-in-chief for the gods,Indra, who was masquerading as an innocent Brahmin seeking to find an animal for propitiation. Indra
pleaded with him to become the animal for the sacrifice as he was not getting any that day, which meant his yagna were destined to go fruitless. Wali accepted the plea playfully knowing fully well that his body was invincible. However, Indra knew that naturally very well, hence he did not strike the demon king on his body but hurled his thunder, vajra, on his weakest part, the head. The demon-king was shattered into pieces of gems, all because he was a unique creature by himself, immensely powerful, and armed with arduous karma, good effects too.
It is said in the mythology, that from the bones of the demon king Wali, were found Diamonds, from his teeth the pearls, from his blood drops ruby, from the gallbladder emerald, from his eyes came out blue sapphires, from the juice of his heart came bright blue lapis lajuli, from his bone marrow appeared karketan, from his nails appeared Lapis lajuli and Cat's eye, from his body fat came out rock-crystal, from his flesh came out coral, from his skin appeared yellow sapphire, and from his semen appeared a type of gems called Bheeshma. From these gems, empowered from the host's body, Sun took away the ruby, Moon picked up pearls, Mars took away coral, Mercury chose emeralds, Jupiter picked up yellow sapphire, Venus took diamonds, Saturn preferred for himself blue sapphire, Rahu took away zircon and Ketu lifted the Lapis lajuli. That is exactly why, when the humans wear these gems in person, they don't get affliction from the respective planets. The quality gems always bestow success, bliss and happiness while the defective or impure gems end up giving poverty only. Reference to the demon king Wali and the emergence of gems and jewels was also made by Varahamihira.Photo Source:www.gemstone.org
